US President Trump's Iran Threat Draws Criticism from Democrats, Support from Republicans
US President Donald Trump's threat to destroy Iran's civilian infrastructure has drawn criticism from several members of Congress, who have questioned his fitness for office.
Trump's threat, made in a profanity-laden Easter Sunday message, has been condemned by several Democrats, including Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari, who called for invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from the presidency.
Ansari, who is of Iranian descent, described Trump as a 'deranged lunatic' and a 'national security threat to our country and the rest of the world.'
Other Democrats, including Hakeem Jeffries and Bernie Sanders, have also criticized Trump's threat, with Sanders calling on Congress to 'act NOW' to end the war.
However, Trump's Republican allies have largely stood behind him, with Senator Lindsey Graham saying that Trump is 'right to blow up' Iran's crucial infrastructure.
The US-Israel war has killed more than 2,000 people in Iran, according to Iranian officials, and has raised concerns about the targeting of civilians and the destruction of civilian infrastructure.
International humanitarian law prohibits the targeting of civilians and the destruction of civilian infrastructure as a form of collective punishment, and several lawmakers have called on the US military to refuse orders to commit war crimes.
