Netanyahu removes Spain from Gaza coordination centre over 'hostility'

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has removed Spain from a coordination centre in Gaza

Netanyahu accused Spain of waging a diplomatic war against Israel and barred Madrid from participating in the centre, citing hostility. He claimed Spain had defamed Israeli soldiers and repeatedly stood against Israel.

Foreign Minister Gideon Saar also slammed Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, saying his government had levelled 'blood libels' at Israel and its army.

Relations between the two countries have deteriorated since Israel launched its military operation in Gaza in October 2023. Spain recognised the state of Palestine in the following year and spoke out against the mistreatment of Palestinians in the occupied territory.

The US-led Civil-Military Coordination Centre (CMCC) is responsible for monitoring the 'ceasefire' and facilitating humanitarian aid into Gaza. Despite the 'ceasefire', Israel has continued near-daily attacks on Gaza, with limitations on aid deliveries still in place.
