Iran's Bushehr Nuclear Plant Under Attack: What Could Happen if It's Damaged

Risks of Radioactive Contamination in the Gulf

The US and Israel's repeated attacks on Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant have raised concerns about the risks of radioactive contamination spreading across the Gulf region. The plant, which is Iran's only functioning nuclear facility, has been targeted multiple times, including in the latest attack on Saturday, which killed one security guard and caused damage to a side building.

Nuclear experts and regional authorities have long warned about the catastrophic consequences of a nuclear incident at Bushehr, including the release of radiological particles, such as Caesium-137, into the atmosphere. These particles can be spread far beyond the release point by wind and water, contaminating food, soil, and drinking water sources for decades.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations' atomic watchdog, has been warning against targeting the plant for months. IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi has called for 'maximum restraint' and warned that a strike on the plant could trigger a regional catastrophe, with 'great consequences' beyond Iran's borders.

The risks of water contamination in the Gulf are also a concern. Radioactive contamination could affect marine life and drinking water supplies in neighboring countries, which rely heavily on desalination of seawater. Some experts have warned that a hit on the plant could contaminate the waters of the entire Gulf region, affecting marine life and drinking water supplies.

The Western response to the attacks on Bushehr has been muted compared to the reaction to the Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has criticized Western nations for failing to speak up about the possible dangers of targeting Bushehr.

Nuclear accidents in the past, such as the Fukushima and Chornobyl disasters, have highlighted the devastating consequences of a nuclear incident. The Bushehr plant's safety is paramount, and the international community must work together to prevent a catastrophic incident in the Gulf region.
