Cuban President Diaz-Canel Defies Trump's Pressure to Resign

US Pressure Intensifies Amid Tensions with Cuba

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has vowed to resist mounting pressure from the United States to resign, amid escalating tensions between the two nations.

In an interview with NBC News, Diaz-Canel stated that 'stepping down is not part of our vocabulary,' reiterating Cuba's commitment to self-determination and sovereignty.

The Cuban president accused the US of adopting a 'hostile policy' that has left the island grappling with widespread power blackouts, fuel shortages, and disruptions to water and food distribution.

Trump's administration has imposed an oil blockade on Cuba and threatened tariffs on any country that sells oil to the island, a move Diaz-Canel described as 'depriving the American people from a normal relationship with Cuba.'

The current tensions between the US and Cuba date back to the Cold War era, when the US took an adversarial stance against left-wing governments across the Americas.

Russia has remained a close ally of Cuba, with Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stating that 'we cannot betray Cuba. That is out of the question. We cannot leave it on its own.'
