Australian Soldier Charged with War Crimes
Australia's most-decorated living soldier, Victor Roberts-Smith, has been charged with alleged war crimes. The charges stem from the findings of an investigation led by Anthony Besanko.
According to the investigation, Roberts-Smith was accused of ordering the shooting of unarmed men on two separate occasions in an effort to 'blood' rookie soldiers. This means that he allegedly wanted to expose new recruits to the harsh realities of war.
The investigation also found that Roberts-Smith was involved in the deaths of a handcuffed Afghan farmer who was kicked off a cliff and a captured Taliban fighter whose prosthetic leg was taken as a trophy. The prosthetic leg was later used by troops as a drinking vessel.
The charges against Roberts-Smith are a significant development in the ongoing investigation into war crimes committed by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan. The case is expected to be closely watched by the international community.
